BBC One Gentleman Jack: Real life of Suranne Jones – showbiz husband and Covid tragedy during filming of new season
Gentleman Jack returns this Sunday evening for its long-awaited second season.Suran Jones once again stars as Anne Lister on BBC One’s popular period drama.She is the favorite actress of many TV fans and has been highly praised for her roles over the years – including Doctor Foster’s Gemma Foster and the detective series Scott and Bailey’s Rachel Bailey.
The Oldham Award-winning star became famous after appearing as Karen McDonald on Coronation Street since 2000.While Suranne has been on our screen for more than two decades, you may not know much about her life away from the cameras.
The 43-year-old was educated at Cardinal Langley High School in Chadderton and was a member of the Oldham Theater Workshop as a teenager.She was named after her grandmother, however, Sarah Anne, and it was reported that Suranne by a priest was not a ‘proper’ name.Suran, who grew up as a Catholic, says that after seeing the images of Jesus on the cross, a carpophobia developed.
In 1997, she played a small role as Mandy Phillips in Coronation Street, played by Chris Collins’ girlfriend – played by Matthew Marsden – before returning Gentleman Jack: to full-time soap operas in 2000 as Karen Phillips.Her character was married twice to Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregerson – the first time for a 10 bet and the second time she and Steve realized they truly loved each other.
